In the last week, we’ve had three big cat sightings reported to us: in Abergele, Corwen, and Connah’s Quay. All three think they saw pumas, with the Corwen sighting taking place last Thursday, Abergele a few weeks ago in mid-October and Connah’s Quay way back in January 2008!
Corwen

Dee reported seeing what they think could have been a puma near Corwen, with the sighting taking place at 12:30pm last Thursday, 27th November. They said: “Spotted a very large black cat with an unusual swagger whilst sitting in a vehicle, got out to walk closer, trying to be quiet so as not to spook the animal but when I got about 30 yards away the car started snarling and spitting and spooked me. I walked away backwards.”
Abergele
Mid-October 2020, Around 10pm
Chloe contacted Puma Watch this week and shared a photo of what she believes was a puma in Coed Y Gopa woods, above Abergele and near the I’m a Celebrity set at Gwrych Castle. She told us: “I was walking the dog with my boyfriend who lives in Abergele, up in the woods and we heard some rustling in the leaves coming down a hill on the left that stopped in the bushes not far from where I was. I thought that it must be a dog at first that ventured a bit far down from it’s owner.
“It was pouring with rain, and about 10pm at this point, and I was using my phone as a torch but trying to not get it wet so visibility wasn’t very good. So anyway, I was leaning forward a bit and was beaconing whatever it was and hitting my legs, like how you’d get a dog to come to you, as my dog had noticed and was whining.
“To my surprise a big black shape moved in the bushes. I didn’t even notice it was there till it moved, almost like it had frozen but then it turned around and looked at me, still standing really still. I was a bit in shock to be honest I didn’t really know what to do. It looked smaller than the big cats that I’ve seen at the Zoo, but much much bigger than a house cat but it looked to me to be very feline.

“I got a picture of it in the bushes and turning away as I didn’t feel threatened by it but I was really shocked, and it ran back up the hill as I beckoned my partner over. I showed him the photo and he was just as shocked as me.
“The article that I saw the other week with the video of the puma crossing the walkway online looks similar to what I saw in size and colour. I read about the sheep going missing and the other reported sightings in the area last week or two from your page and I thought I would get in contact as I’ve been feeling a bit guilty about not reporting. I thought about reporting it to the police but I felt a bit stupid to be honest and I didn’t think that anybody would believe me.”
Chloe also provided these pictures of the area it was spotted:

Connah’s Quay
January 2008, Around 7:30am

Thomas got in touch to report a historical sighting in Connah’s Quay, at Llwyni Nature Reserve, the disused railway line running from Northop Hall to the Hillsdown Drive estate. They saw what they think was a puma at around 7:30am one morning in January 2008, and told us: “I was walking with my two Bedlington’s around the perimeter of the woods. We were at the top of a big dip in the land when the dogs started sniffing the air and barking. I looked across the dip to the top of the other side expecting to see another walker with dogs. I couldn’t believe what I saw.
“Approx 50 yards away I saw a very big black cat stand up under a young tree. I watched it staring at us for a moment before it just leapt over some low lying branches before making of into the woods near the old Buckley train line. I continued down and up the dip to the tree where I first saw it stand, you could see an impression on the ground where it had been lying. The flattened ground was definitely not made by any domestic cat. My dogs frantically looking for the animal.
“It was at this moment I realised that we could be in danger. I hurried past and couldn’t wait to tell my partner when I got home. Everyone I told didn’t believe me at all. Then a couple of months later on the front page of the evening leader there it was another sighting reported. The teasing and joking stopped at them seeing a picture on the front page.”
